The last few years has seen an influx of talented female producers and DJs emerge from the world of electronic music. From Maya Jane Coles, Heidi and Nina Kraviz to Ikonika and our very own Monki, the scene has certainly seen a refreshing change from what was once a male dominated industry. With that in mind, we thought we’d dedicate this month’s edition of student success solely to the sisters who are doing it for themselves!
Plum – Music Production Certificate
Plum originally studied the Music Production Certificate back in 2006. Since then she has signed to the LA based label Summer Rain Recording, and released a number of EPs and albums.
2013 has seen Plum receive her biggest accolade yet after she won a Scottish Alternative Music Award (Best Electronic category), becoming the first female ever to win. Not only has there never been a female winner at the SAMAs, but the Edinburgh-based musician was also the first female ever to be nominated in the Best Electronic category. Here she managed to rise above some stiff competition, including the category favorite Chvrches. Speaking on winning the Scottish Alternative Music Awards Plum said: “I was literally speechless! I think all of us in the Electronic Category expected Chvrches to win, so I’m really amazed and delighted to have won this award – against all odds. My fans have been a tremendous support, so it’s really brilliant to be able to see their excitement at this achievement.”
Known as a “mad scientist” for her energetic live performances, Plum sings, plays instruments and uses home-made floor pad samplers and various buttons and triggers. She says: “I absolutely loved my one-year Production Course at Point Blank. The tutors were incredibly encouraging and talented. I hope to come back soon for a few refresher courses – I want to make sure I’m continuing to improve in my production skills”.
Plum is set to release her next EP, Betsy Thunder, in July 2013 and she’ll be playing Electric Circus in Edinburgh on May 2nd. Check out her track ‘Myriad’ below…
Queenie took the Introduction to Music Production: Logic Pro course back in 2009. After finishing the course, she dedicated her time to developing her production techniques and fusing it with her existing knowledge. Queenie says: “For me it was about using the knowledge I had learnt from my classical training and transferring it into producing and making electronic music. I found the [Point Blank] course through the Internet, arranged a time to go in and immediately loved the atmosphere of the college. I was taught by a really great tutor Ben Medcalfe, who was incredibly knowledgeable and patient. I would recommend the course to anyone wanting to get into music production.” Once she completed her course, It didn’t take long for some of her first tracks to be picked up by Rinse FM which then went on to get support from Scratcha DVA and fellow Point Blank student Monki, she says: “I also attended Point Blank with Madam X who has supported my music and played it on her 1Xtra shows and included it in her mixes from the start.”
Last year proved to be a pinnacle year for Queenie. She featured on vocals for Stay + on the track “Crashed” which was put out on the Black Butter label and reached number 9 in the iTunes Electronic Chart. Not content with that, she set her sights further and signed her debut single, “And Every” to Greenmoney Recordings which reached No. 1 in the Juno single charts and No. 1 in the Juno UK Funky/Garage charts. The track has gained support and radio play from Annie Mac, Mistajam, Rob da Bank, B. Traits and more. Check out a snippet of her debut track “And Every” below…
2013 already looks set to be a big one for Queenie. She now has her own management team and has featured on Rinse FM TV as well as doing guest mixes for them and Radio 1xtra. She says: “I will be releasing more music, working with other artists, doing remixes, DJing as well as performing a new live show. I have also started a new club night called Make Shapes with my friends Coco Cole and Madam X coming soon!”
