It’s that time of the month again – we dive into more of the many student success stories that have been established and nurtured right here at Point Blank. For March 2015, we’re looking at Hamburg wonderkid Felix Jaehn, Kiss FM radio producer Anna Kay and Club MTV’s R3WIRE.
Felix Jaehn – Music Production, Sound Engineering & Business Diploma
Hamburg’s Felix Jaehn studied our Music Production, Sound Engineering & Business Diploma, and shortly after that his feel good remix of ‘Cheerleader’ for OMI on Ultra Music (listen below) blew up and went to #1 in 11 countries including Australia which is an amazing achievement. Now, Felix is spreading his wings and has just released his new single ‘Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)’ featuring Jasmine Thompson. There’s also an official video for the single which Felix stars in himself, and it’s the first time he’s starred in one of his own videos.
Felix has now got a record deal with Universal Music, and before that he’d signed singles to Spinnin’ Records and Armin van Buuren’s Armada Music. Not too shabby, right? He’s recently been busy at songwriting sessions in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Stockholm and is working closely with his publisher Sony ATV. If you want to see Felix live in the flesh, he’s got plenty of bookings in Europe and has his first US shows planned for later this year. He’s also got a gig at Egg London on the 3rd of July. As you can imagine, everyone wants to talk to Felix Jaehn now so he’s got a lot of press days ahead of him for radio and German TV. Here at Point Blank, seeing Felix doing so well makes us immensely happy and proud.
On his time at PB, Felix said: “What helped me at Point Blank was the ability to network with other young up-and-coming artists and learn from each other, I’m still working with some of them! The production and mixing courses also helped me to learn all the basics.”
“Most beneficial for me was the Business Course actually, my instructor Jen Anderson was awesome! I learnt all about how the music industry works, how to promote myself and how to build a brand – it helped me big time to get where I am today. In 2015, I think you have all the necessary tools available. Go build a fan base by yourself!”
“A little advice I would give to new artists is that you don’t need to contact industry people. If you have great music and manage to achieve those first little bits of success online, people will come to you. When you do have online success and labels approach you, don’t wait too long. The next step is going from Hype Machine charts and SoundCloud plays to iTunes and Spotify.”
Anna Kay – Radio Course (part of the Radio Certificate)
Much like BBC Radio 1’s Monki, Anna Kay studied the Radio Course as part of the Radio Certificate at Point Blank. Shortly after graduating, Anna interned at Somethin’ Else where she got to work across radio shows on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, interned at Ministry of Sound Radio as a Broadcast Assistant and she produced the Breakfast show on Rinse FM. Anna now works as a Radio Producer at Kiss FM which is one of the UK’s biggest radio stations. She works across live and and pre-recorded specialist radio shows for the likes of Shortee Blitz & DJ MK, Majestic and Steve Smart, as well as producing shows for Kiss’ new digital station, Kiss Fresh. Kiss Fresh is all about new beats and is dedicated to new talent and new music.
Anna started at Kiss just before Kiss Fresh launched, which happened alongside the also new digital Kisstory station, which is dedicated to old school anthems. She currently schedules the daytime music on Kiss Fresh and produces weekly specialist shows for artists such as Preditah, DJ Q, Ill Blu, Tough Love and DJ Snips. Anna is also involved in sourcing DJ mixes for both Kiss and Kiss Fresh as well as demoing talent for new shows. As you can see, Anna’s radio credentials are of the highest order!

When asked about her studies at Point Blank, Anna Kay said: “I loved my time at Point Blank. It made such a difference learning in an environment full of people that were passionate about what they were doing, and it was great meeting other creatives who were on other courses. The Radio Course gave me an understanding of how radio works, what makes good and bad radio, as well as the practical knowledge of how to use a radio desk. I think doing a course at Point Blank definitely made people take what I wanted to do more seriously as so many people have heard of the college and its great reputation. Thanks, PB!”
R3WIRE studied Point Blank’s Music Production Online Logic Pro Diploma, and is now Club MTV‘s resident DJ & Music Producer. It’s the dream job for someone like him, as he gets to DJ all over the world, play at the best events and make music at the same time. R3WIRE also gets to meet and watch some of the biggest artists all the time, which is a nice bonus. Over the last few years, he joined forces with his partner in crime, Varski. They’ve got 5 scheduled releases over the next few months and plenty more in the pipeline. Upcoming events for R3WIRE include The Holi Festival of Colours Tour, Bloc Party Festival India and V Festival, so it’s looking like a busy summer!
When asked about how he found his course at PB, R3WIRE said: “Because of my busy schedule, the online course was perfect. I could easily do it in my own time and the coursework was more than manageable. I learnt a lot while doing the course but more importantly, I got the reassurance I needed. This was mainly due to the fact the tutor actually opened up my project at his end, and did a video tutorial reply explaining everything. It was like I was sitting there with him. He also answered my additional questions via online masterclasses, which were also helpful.”
